Jimmy Jean-Louis talks “Touissaint Louverture” at Haiti Cultural Exchange screening

“Touissaint Louverture,” a 2011 film by Philippe Niang, is featured at the 20th New York African Film Festival, which runs until April 9. Jean-Louis will be honored at the festival for his starring role in the film, which chronicles the slave revolts that led to the Haitian Revolution.

At a screening hosted by Haiti Cultural Exchange for his film “Le President a-t-il le SIDA?” at Five Myles gallery in Brooklyn on April 6, Jean-Louis spoke about his experience working on the critically-acclaimed film and his motivations for accepting the role of Louverture.

Guests flocked to New York City on March 30 to attend Nadege Fleurimond’s annual Easter ball at the Dimenna Center for Classical Music. Renowned Haitian-American jazz singer Melanie J.B. Charles opened the night, serenading attendees with her sultry voice. Sponsored by Bernier Legal, Dnalsi Clothing, Prestige Beer and Amour Creole, part of this year’s proceeds will go to Redemption Inc.; a nonprofit youth-education and community empowerment organization.

La Nuit Des Jeunes 2013

On March 23 Jaz Enterprise hosted the eighth annual La Nuit Des Jeunes at New York City’s Terminal 5. Hundreds of Kompas and Zouk lovers from the tri-state area filled the venue to listen to hits from Kreyol La, Carimi and T-Vice. Attendees were in for a big surprise when Olivier Duret performed alongside T-Vice, signaling his official return to the band since his departure in 2011.
